What’s Available and How to Access It

Starting or growing a business is an exciting step in one’s business journey, but it has its own challenges and obstacles mainly related to the financial aspect, especially for start-ups and people with no financial backups. However, nothing is impossible and that dream of setting up a new business or expanding one to modernise it or innovate practices, is still possible thanks to different funding opportunities that are available.

Access to funding is important for all businesses as it helps reduce financial risks while building a solid foundation for growth. This is attributed to the fact that funding covers a wide range of business areas, all with their eligibility criteria in place followed by a selection process that will determine allocation of funds.

Many are those who are discouraged to apply for funding schemes as they might consider the process as a waste of time if the application is not granted a funding opportunity, but let’s discover what type of funding is available before being even discouraged to look at what’s available for a family business setup and other types of businesses.

A family business in Malta can apply for the Family Business Office Incentives that cover among others, fiscal incentives, lease renewal, transfer of immovable property, and Education and Training, each incentive with its own guidelines and application form for funding.

Even though business development has evolved over the years, many of the current funding schemes have been in place for a number of years, making them successful and more accessible to those who are familiar with funding programmes.

The MicroInvest Scheme, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, has been supporting businesses since 2014. This scheme is a tax credit incentive for micro enterprises and self-employed and is ideal for those who invest in motor vehicles, experience an increase in wage costs and refurbish their business premises, among other eligibilities.

There’s also the Business Enhance Grant Schemes, part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund 2021 – 2027, aimed at supporting business’ operations, fostering innovation while promoting sustainable growth. This funding opportunity supports a more creative and smarter Europe and has a number of deadlines throughout the year based on the type of incentives that one would opt for. This Scheme covers various opportunities for SMEs such as digitilisation, Business Reports, International Strategies and others.
